Mount Yudonosan is 1,504 meters above sea level and is famous as a sacred mountain for mountain worship (Shugendo), where people seclude themselves in the mountains and undergo rigorous training. Together with Mt. Gassan and Mt. Hagurosan, it is called the Dewa Sanzan, and it is said that practitioners who practice on Mt. Gassan and Mt. Haguro san reach the state of Buddhahood here. The main shrine of Yudonosan Shrine is located in a gorge on the north side of Mt. Yudonosan.
The main shrine of Yudonoyama Shrine, located halfway up Mt. Yudono, is a sacred shrine that is separated from the secular world and is known for its strict commands such as no photography allowed and no worshipers allowed with shoes on. Yudonoyama Shrine is a rare shrine that does not have a shrine building. It is a mysterious shrine where people have been told since ancient times, ``Don't speak'' and ``Don't listen,'' and what you see or hear here must not be revealed.
