A shrine dedicated to the god of hot springs and water, the local guardian deity of Yutagawa Onsen Town.
It is said to have been founded in the first year of Hakuji (650), and is a highly prestigious shrine that is listed in the old book ``Sandai Jitsuroku'' and the Engishiki Shinmyocho, which was drafted in the 5th year of Engi (905).
The main shrine was built in 1888 by Kaneyoshi Takahashi, a famous architect from Shonai.
Kaneyoshi Takahashi is a master architect who also designed many of Tsuruoka's major tourist spots, including the Matsugaoka Cultivation Field's Jamsil Room, the former Nishitagawa District Office, the former Tsuruoka Police Station, and the former Higashitagawa District Office.
In the precincts, there is a large tree called ``Ginkgo biloba'', which is said to have originated from a shrine where pregnant women prayed for the production of milk.
It is also famous for the filming of the movie "Twilight Seibei" in 2002.
