Chokai Mountain Climbing Attractions and Fun
Chokaisan (2,236 meters above sea level), which rises on the border of Yamagata and Akita Prefectures, is also called “Dewa Fuji” for its beautiful conical shape, and has been popular among mountain climbers and ascetic practitioners for centuries. In addition to mountain climbing, the surrounding area is dotted with abundant nature and historical spots, offering many things to do even after climbing the mountain.
Here are 10 of my personal favorite things to do in and around Chokaisan.
1. Magnificent natural scenery
Chokaisan's greatest attraction is its magnificent natural scenery.
The 2,236-meter-high summit offers a spectacular view of the Sea of Japan, the Shonai Plain, and the mountains in the distance.
Especially when standing on the summit in the morning or evening hours, the beautiful scenery illuminated by soft light soothes the hearts of climbers.
Enjoy the spectacular view that will blow away the fatigue of the climb.
2. Diverse climbing routes
Chokaisan offers multiple climbing routes, with courses that can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced climbers alike.
There are many climbers from all over the country, and one of the best parts of the climb is that they change the course each time .
For beginners, the relatively gentle “Kisakataguchi Course” is recommended.
On the other hand, for experienced climbers, the “Yunodai-guchi Course,” with its steep and rocky terrain, is a challenging route.
The appeal of this mountaineering tour is that you can choose a route that suits your physical fitness and schedule, and enjoy mountain climbing without strain.

3. Seasonal beauty
Chokaisan is a mountain that shows different expressions in each of the four seasons.
In spring, the melting snow creates a beautiful landscape, and in summer, fresh greenery adorns the mountain. In autumn, the entire mountain is enveloped in autumn colors, especially from mid to late October, when the trail is transformed into a colorful landscape.
In winter, Mt. Chokai is covered with snow, creating a harsh yet mysterious atmosphere.
No matter what season you visit, you can feel the changes in nature at Chokai-san.
4. Mountain worship and historical background
Chokaisan has long been revered as a sacred site of Shugendo, and many ascetic practitioners have climbed the mountain as part of their mountain worship.
At the top of the mountain is the Chokai-san Omonoimi Jinja Shrine, which has a mysterious atmosphere.

5. Exploration of volcanic landforms
Chokaisan is a volcano, and along the trail you can observe the unique volcanic landforms and traces of lava flows.
Especially in the mountain highlands called “Ohama,” you can see vast lava plateaus formed by volcanic activity and experience the power of nature.

6. Chokai Blue Line
Here are some recommendations for places to visit around Chokaisan.
The Chokai Blue Line, which runs halfway up Mt. Chokai, is a spectacular driving course that runs from the sea coast all the way up to an elevation of 1,100 meters.
Along the way, you can see both the Sea of Japan and Mt. Chokai at the same time, making it a popular spot for cycling as well as touring by car or motorcycle.
Especially during the summer and fall, visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of blue sky, sea, and autumn leaves.
7. Shishigahara Marsh
Shishigahara Marsh, an alpine marsh on Mt. Chokaisan, is a natural treasure trove of diverse alpine flora.
In summer, colorful flowers are in full bloom, and simply strolling through the marshland is a soothing experience. With well-maintained walking trails, this is a great place not only for climbers, but also for those who want to enjoy nature walks.
8. Fukiura Spring
Chokai, but the “Fukiura Spring” is particularly popular.
Chokai, this water is very clear and tasty, and provides a healing experience for visitors.
It is a great place to rehydrate after climbing a mountain and is also an important water source for the local people.
9. Dobara Falls
The “Dobara Falls” located on the Yusa Town side is a waterfall formed by a large amount of spring water from Mt. Chokaisan, and is popular for its volume of water and beautiful scenery. Near the waterfall, there is a place where visitors can draw spring water, and many people come to drink this pure water. The water cascading down from the falls is beautiful, making it a perfect spot for people seeking coolness, especially in the summer. The surrounding nature and serenity provide a relaxing time after climbing the mountain.
10.Maruike-sama
Maruike-sama” is a mysterious pond created by spring water from Mt. Chokaisan, and its bright blue-green water is breathtakingly beautiful.
This pond is considered sacred by the locals and has long been revered as a “water god. The high transparency of the pond and the way its color changes with the light attracts visitors. The quiet and mysterious atmosphere of this spot allows visitors to experience the mysteries of nature firsthand.
Personally, I recommend Maruike-sama in the early morning!
summary
Chokaisan is full of various attractions woven together by its magnificent nature, mountain worship, and unique volcanic terrain.
Even after you have enjoyed climbing the mountain, there are many beautiful scenic and historical spots in the surrounding area.
In particular, places where visitors can feel the bounty of Mt. Chokai, such as “Tobadera Falls” and “Maruike-sama,” are very popular among tourists other than mountain climbers.
We hope you will visit these spots in conjunction with your climb of Mt. Chokaisan and enjoy a wonderful trip that brings you in touch with nature and history!
