In Shonai, summer comes alive after dark. Fireworks over the Japan Sea, a national-treasure pagoda glowing in the night, a waterfall lit up in the woods — the real luxury of a Shonai summer is the “second act” that follows a day at the beach.
As your hosts, we’d like to share five events worth an overnight stay in summer 2026, sorted into light-ups and fireworks. We hope it helps you plan.

Light-Ups
Mt. Haguro Five-Story Pagoda Light-Up (Tsuruoka|Mt. Haguro)
Just a short drive from Watausagi, Mt. Haguro hides a national treasure deep in its cedar avenue: a five-story pagoda that takes on a different face after dark. Lit against the black forest, it’s a breathtaking sight — quite unlike its daytime solemnity.
And 2026 is a special year: the once-in-twelve-years “Year of the Horse” sacred anniversary (umadoshi go-en-nen), with many commemorative events planned. Look for the night-only special goshuin seals (in 2026, one hand-written and two stamped designs), candle nights, and a “rainbow road” lighting the approach.
Held on select days from July 18 (Sat) to September 23 (Wed, hol.) — not every day, so check the official schedule. Lighting hours: 19:00–21:30 in July, 18:30–21:00 in August, 18:00–20:30 in September (reception ends earlier). Cooperation fee from 500 yen (high-school age and up). You walk about 300 m of stone steps from the Zuishinmon gate, so bring a light and sturdy shoes; bear-warning notices are posted, so a bear bell is reassuring. Inquiries: Haguro Tourism Association 0235-62-4727 (closed Tuesdays).
A host’s tip: climb before sunset and you’ll catch both the fading sky and the moment the lights come on.
Tamasudare Falls Light-Up (Sakata)
At 63 m, Tamasudare is said to be the tallest single-drop waterfall in Yamagata, and for a few summer nights it’s bathed in light. The glowing ribbon of water deep in the trees feels like another world from its daytime self — a perfect outing when you’re after something cool. The path is maintained but dim, so bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes.
Held August 7 (Fri) to August 16 (Sun), lit from sunset to 21:00 (100-yen cooperation fee per person). Inquiries: Sakata City Yawata Branch Office 0234-64-3111.
Fireworks
Yuza Sunset Festival Town Fireworks (Yuza)
The earliest fireworks of the season in Yamagata. With Mt. Chokai and the Japan Sea behind you, you watch up close from the sands of Nishihama Beach. The signature is fireworks set to booming J-POP, and star-mines launched all at once from sea, surf, and shore.
The 2026 date hasn’t been announced yet (it was July 26 in 2025, and it’s usually held in late July). Please check the latest date with the Yuza Chokai Tourism Association before you go. The venue is Nishihama Beach (Fukura, Yuza), about a 20-minute walk from JR Fukura Station. Parking is crowded, so the train is recommended; a 1,000-yen cooperation fee per car applies. Inquiries: Yuza Chokai Tourism Association 0234-72-5666.
33rd Akagawa Fireworks Festival (Tsuruoka)
With a launch zone stretching about 2 km along the river, this is a show whose scale is rare even by national standards. Chosen among Japan’s “50 Best Fireworks Festivals,” it’s also a national design-fireworks competition that draws top pyrotechnicians. The 2026 theme is “HIBIKI — resounding emotion, a shining future.”
Held August 15 (Sat), launch from 19:15. Venue: the Akagawa riverside (Mikawa Bridge to Haguro Bridge). In stormy weather it is canceled rather than postponed. Inquiries: Akagawa Fireworks Executive Committee Office 0235-64-0701.
Watausagi is right in Tsuruoka, and Akagawa is the local summer climax. Crowds are guaranteed, so use the inn as your base and set out early.
Sakata Fireworks 2026 (Sakata)
Staged on the majestic Mogami River, with collaboration fireworks by famous makers from across Japan, three two-shaku shells fired at once, and a great aerial Niagara — about 10,000 shells filling the sky over the river mouth.
Set for September 12 (Sat) in 2026. The move up from mid-September (its slot through 2025) reflects recent heavy rains that swell and flood the Mogami riverbed, plus extreme heat. Venue: the Mogami River park. Inquiries: Sakata Fireworks Executive Committee Office 0234-26-5759.
Coastal Bites, Before or After
Three coastal spots worth a stop for the hours before an event, or a bite beforehand.
- Yunohama 100-Year Kitchen (Yunohama Onsen) — a new food hub of the Yunohama hot-spring town where visitors and locals mingle.
- SAKATANTO (next to Sakata Port) — a hub for local food and sightseeing, with dining, shops, and tourism and fishing information desks.
- Nagisa no Koban “Kamon Mare” (Kamo Bay area) — a community hub lined with soft-serve and original gelato made with red shrimp and squid ink.
In Closing
Play at the sea, warm up in an onsen, and end the night with fireworks or a light-up. A Shonai summer lets you pack several “good things” into a single day. Fireworks especially draw crowds, and getting home afterward takes time — stay the night and you can enjoy the afterglow without rushing.
Watausagi is here as your base for these summer nights. We hope this summer becomes an evening you’ll never forget — we’d love to welcome you.
