\[2025 Edition] Akagawa Fireworks Festival Complete Guide – A Must-Read for Visitors from Outside the Prefecture!

\[2025 Edition] Akagawa Fireworks Festival Complete Guide – A Must-Read for Visitors from Outside the Prefecture!

CONTENTS.

Every summer, the Akagawa Fireworks Festival in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, draws fireworks fans from all over Japan.
From massive star mines that span the entire width of the river, to artistic fireworks perfectly synchronized with music, to the National Design Fireworks Competition where pyrotechnicians from across the country showcase their skills—this is a must-see event.
The 2025 theme is:
“Kishōtenketsu – Shining Forever as a Source of Local Pride”.
Here’s your complete guide to making the most of the festival, even if you’re visiting from outside the prefecture!

🎇 Origins and History of the Akagawa Fireworks Festival

The Akagawa Fireworks Festival began in 1991, when it was first organized by the Tsuruoka Junior Chamber International (JCI).。

The fireworks are launched along a 2-kilometer stretch of the Akagawa River, with displays spanning up to 1,000 meters across the sky. Making full use of this vast venue, the festival presents large-scale performances that are considered rare among fireworks festivals in Japan. The first event was held as the Tohoku Fireworks Competition. From the second year onward, with guidance from the Omagari Junior Chamber International in Akita Prefecture, which had close ties to the organizers, it was reestablished as the National Design Fireworks Competition.

The 30th Akagawa Fireworks Festival, originally scheduled for August 15, 2020, was postponed to a later year due to the spread of COVID-19.。

In 2021, in the hope of bringing an end to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers held "Akagawa Fireworks Presents 2021." From July 23 to August 21, about 30 fireworks were launched each day along the Akagawa riverside.

On August 20, 2022, the festival returned with spectator seating for the first time in three years. Although the annual Design Fireworks Competition was suspended, the event featured special fireworks celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Sakai family's arrival as lords of the former Shonai Domain, as well as a collaboration with the TV anime Tokyo Revengers.

Today, the festival is celebrated for its fireworks synchronized with music and performances with thematic artistry, attracting some of Japan’s top pyrotechnicians.

💖 Why It Continues to Be Loved

  1. A Festival Protected by the Community

    • The festival is supported not only by corporate sponsors but also by contributions from local residents and individuals.
Through donations starting from just a few thousand yen and volunteer activities, the people of the community have cherished and nurtured it as “their own fireworks.”

  2. A Relationship of Trust with the Pyrotechnicians

    • The festival is praised by pyrotechnicians across Japan, who say, “The audience at Akagawa is warm and makes it worth launching fireworks.” The loud applause and cheers from the crowd create a strong sense of unity throughout the event.

  3. The Whole Town in Fireworks Mode

    • On the day of the festival, food stalls line the streets from midday, and the shopping districts are filled with visitors. The entire city comes alive, celebrating it as a true “festival day.”

  4. A Special Night That Brings People Together

    • It is cherished as a place for couples, families, and friends to make memories, and also as a moment to honor loved ones with memorial fireworks, leaving a lasting mark in many hearts.

🌟 Why It’s Worth Visiting from Outside the Prefecture

The Akagawa Fireworks Festival is not just an event to watch big fireworks — it is a special space created through the unity of people, the city, and the pyrotechnicians.
Even first-time visitors find themselves swept up in the atmosphere and can’t help but think, “I want to come back next year.”

🎁 Don’t Miss the Official Akagawa Fireworks Festival Merchandise!

If you’re coming to the Akagawa Fireworks Festival, be sure to grab some official merchandise.
One top recommendation is the *Patapata Uchiwa* (folding fan). It’s not just for keeping cool — during the fireworks, there’s a moment when the entire venue uses them together, giving you a true sense of unity as part of the audience.

Main Official Merchandise (2025)

  • Muffler Towel (Pink/Black) – ¥1,500

  • Bucket Hat – ¥3,500

  • Plush Mascot – ¥800

  • Baby on Board Magnet – ¥1,500

  • Patapata Uchiwa (approx. 30 cm diameter) – ¥800

Where to Buy: Official sales booths inside the venue, or the online shop (accessible via QR code)

💡 Sachiko’s Tip
The *Patapata Uchiwa* is a magical item that lets you join the “official time” when the entire audience waves them between fireworks displays.
Even if it’s your first time visiting from outside the prefecture, this moment will make you feel like a true part of the crowd — highly recommended! ❣️
